The writing gets better the further along you get and his account of meeting Fante is my favourite short in the book.

Most of the essays reveal Bukowski’s world view while the essays on other writers felt like pure grandstanding and machismo. Bukowski would’ve been a dreadful neighbour and friend; he was certainly an awful husband and lover. Undoubtedly some fans will love it, but I only found a small percentage that did anything for me.
